For SJL, info for others:
Steve,
I talked to John McCarrthy and he will come on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
You have two open slots on your calendar, 11:30-1:00 and 4:00 on.
John is prepared to spend as much or as little time with you as you
like, so scheduling is pretty much to your convenience.
All other days next week are much worse.
I will try to have a videorecorder handy in case you want to review
the Lighthill tapes.
The paper is not in excellent shape, but there is a pile of text
which is being massaged. The subject matter is far broader than
the speech report covered, and that took thee better part of a year,
so this does not begin to measure up to that. There is a desire on
the part of the community to get a report that good, but it
is going to take a lot more work.
The paper consists primarily of a history section and a plan. The
history section is in much better shape than the plan (..actually,
it's better the other way around.. the plan is much worse off than
the history section..) . It is our intent to release the text to
the community this week and ask for responses fairly quickly. This is
being done to try to met your HAC appearancee and the budget review
deadlines, and you should view the results as preliminary (i.e.
fixable). The paper will appear in <AI> and I will send you a notice
when it does. In any case, whatever we have you will also get by
the weekend.
Steve
